Leila Jeffreys Captures the Diverse Beauty of Naturally Colorful Birds
On Instagram
With a mother from India, a father from the Isle of Man, and herself being born in Papua New Guinea, photographer Leila Jeffreys is no stranger to the adventures of the world. As a child she nursed orphaned birds and other wildlife back to health. Her family’s village in India was surrounded by monkeys, mongooses, and buffalo. Now in Sydney, Australia, it’s only natural for her lifelong love of the natural world to continue, with her work’s focus being an ongoing series of highly expressive bird portraits.
The series has featured all types of birds, with everything from cockatoos to birds of prey appearing. It seems unlikely that another photographer without the background of Leila would have been able to evoke such emotion from the animals. Her comfort with the birds, and them with her, really shows in the photos. The cockatoos in particular seem delighted to be starring in series.
She has worked with scientist researching endangered species, wildlife rescue groups, wildlife parks, zoos and private breeders that are all passionate about conservation of these feathered beings. If you wish to see her work in person then you can stop by at Olsen Irwin Gallery, Woollahra, Sydney where she exhibits through September 28th.
